The two characters are not combined to form a double arrow.

\[[Word]] is not interpreted as an anchor.
The double brackets around the word are preserved.

[\[[Word]]] is not interpreted as a bibliography anchor.
The triple brackets around the word are preserved.

In these cases, the backslash character is automatically removed.
